What Does A Radiologist Do?
Radiologists are medical doctors who specialize in using medical imaging in diagnosing and treating patients. They act as expert 
consultants to other medical providers who refer you for additional testing. Based on your symptoms, your medical history, and other factors involved, your radiologist will recommend the appropriate form of medical imaging and conduct a diagnostic or exploratory exam. After testing is complete, they will interpret the results and make the proper recommendations to the referring physician.
At Intermountain Medical Imaging, our radiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases or other health issues that impact various parts of the body. Radiology procedures they perform include:
- X-rays: Electromagnetic radiation is used to create images of certain body parts and regions. These can help detect broken bones or problems within muscles and other soft tissues.
- Fluoroscopy: This is a type of x-ray that creates moving images. A contrast dye is injected, and pictures are transferred to a monitor. This allows the radiologist to see how various body systems, such as the digestive process, work together.
- Computed tomography (CT): CT or CAT scans rely on x-ray and computer technology to provide detailed, cross-sectional views of the body. Clear visualization of bones and body tissues is crucial in detecting cancer, heart disease, and other potentially life-threatening health conditions.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This relies on a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency signals to produce highly detailed images of various body parts. MRIs can aid in detecting breast cancer and other diseases, as well as problems within the brain, heart, joints, and nervous system.
- Ultrasound: This test sends high-frequency sound waves into the body, which then echo off body structures. It allows your radiologist to obtain real-time images that show the size, shape, and consistency of body organs.
In addition to using the above tests to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions, our radiologists use medical imaging to perform interventional procedures. These include treatments to restrict blood flow to tumors and to help prevent embolisms, strokes, or surgical bleeds. What Type Of Training/Education Do Radiologists Have?
As medical doctors, our radiologists go through years of education and training. After completing medical school and passing their licensing exam, they must also complete a four-year residency. This combines on-the-job training with additional knowledge in the field of radiology, its effects on the human body, standard safety practices, and how to interpret the results of medical imaging exams.
