Mammograms
the way they were meant to be!

Remember to take care of yourself too.

Intermountain Medical Imaging is changing mammograms for the better. 3D screening and diagnostic mammograms are currently offered at our Meridian location within the comfort of private waiting rooms.

Screening Mammography

A mammogram is a very low-dose x-ray of the breast. Mammograms can be used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. This type of mammogram is called a screening mammogram. Screening mammograms usually involve two or more images of each breast. Screening mammograms are generally for women ages 40 and older. Some women may need to start earlier based on personal risk factors that should be discussed with their healthcare provider.

Intermountain Medical Imaging uses a newer type of mammogram called a 3D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis) that creates three-dimensional images of the breast. This technology has been shown to increase breast cancer detection while decreasing the number of false positive results.

DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAPHY

A diagnostic mammogram is used to investigate suspicious breast changes or unexpected findings on a screening mammogram.

Signs and symptoms that should be evaluated with diagnostic mammography may include:

  • A lump
  • Breast pain
  • Nipple discharge
  • Thickening of skin on the breast
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast

A diagnostic mammogram can help determine if these symptoms are indicative of breast cancer by using specialized images to evaluate the areas of concern.

SUPPLEMENTAL SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN WITH DENSE BREASTS

Your mammogram report will include your breast tissue density. Breast density is a measure of how much fibrous and glandular tissue is in your breast compared to fat tissue. Having dense breasts is common. Sometimes, it is harder to see through dense breast tissue on mammograms, and small masses can be obscured. In addition, women who have dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer. Other imaging tests, in addition to mammography, may help find cancers in women with dense breast tissue. At IMI, we offer automatic whole breast ultrasound and abbreviated breast MRI, both of which have been shown to increase breast cancer detection when combined with annual mammography.

NO ONE LOOKS FORWARD TO A MAMMOGRAM. UNTIL NOW.

Intermountain Medical Imaging combines the lifestyle you enjoy with the life-saving benefits of your annual mammogram. In 15 short minutes, you will have made a decision that could be worth another 15 years of your life.

What To Expect:

Generally, no preparation is required for a mammogram. However, you may be asked to change into provided clothing to eliminate any interference with metal objects, such as buckles, zippers, or bras.

You can eat and take medications as usual. No deodorants, powders, or lotions should be applied that day near the chest region.

Before any imaging begins, a detailed personal and family history will be gathered to gain insight into your potential risk for developing breast cancer.

You will be positioned next to the mammography equipment. The technologist will then position you, compress your breast, and take images from different angles. At IMI, we utilize a SmartCurve paddle (a curved surface that mirrors the shape of the breast) for added patient comfort.

Our Genius 3D Mammography HD exam detects 41% more invasive breast cancers, reduces false positives by up to 40%, and allows visualization of masses and distortions associated with cancers to be seen more clearly, with high-resolution 3D imaging providing earlier detection.

Once your exam is complete, no restrictions will be placed upon you. You may eat, drive, and resume your activities as usual.

Your images will be examined by a radiologist who specializes in breast imagingThe final report will be sent to you and your requested healthcare provider within one week.
