Everything You Wanted To Know About Radiologists (But were afraid to ask)

At Intermountain Medical Imaging, we are proud to have some of the best radiologists in the state of Idaho on our staff. Of course that might not mean much to you unless you know the important role they play as members of your personal healthcare team.  That’s why we thought you would enjoy a quick overview of what our radiologists do, and how they impact your healthcare.

Radiologists begin their education just like any other physician, but that is where the similarities end. Upon completion of four years of medical school and a one-year internship, doctors who wish to specialize in radiology begin a four-year residency where they learn the ins and outs of this unique medical field.  Even after completing nine years of post-graduate studies, they are still not qualified to call themselves radiologists until they have passed a rigorous, national board certification exam. You would think that the learning ends there, but many choose to continue with specialty fellowship training to concentrate in a specific area of medical imaging.

Some of the areas our radiologists specialize in include:

Along with physical exams and laboratory tests, imaging studies play a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions. When your healthcare provider refers you to Intermountain Medical Imaging, a radiologist that specializes in the area of your condition will plan your examination to target the zone of clinical concern. Next, either the radiologist or a board-certified radiologic technologist under the supervision of a radiologist will conduct the examination. Ultimately all results will be interpreted by your radiologist, although they may also consult with other specialists in the group to confirm the diagnosis and the intended treatment plan.

The technological advances in the fields of the different radiologic specialties allow us to maintain the highest level of quality and accuracy when it comes to your care.  Our radiologists are not only highly educated, but also have years of experience to provide you with the best care possible. We can even send the results of your exam to your healthcare provider within hours of your procedure through our secure internet connection.

When your physician orders medical imaging for your condition, tell them that only the board-certified radiologists at IMI will do. Contact us to schedule your appointment at one of our convenient Treasure Valley locations today!
